Robot vacuums take pet hair, lint, and dust from the floor before they settle. They can also avoid obstacles such as furniture that is unstable and stairs.

The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This involves emptying the bin (and occasionally, rinsing it) and wiping the cameras and sensors. They also require to be plugged in. Many come with smartphone apps for scheduling, setting up settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the line of top-of-the-line robotic vacuum cleaners that are a staple in any modern home. This model has seriously strong suction and an HEPA filter that will help anyone concerned about allergies. It also has a powerful battery which can clean for two hours, and return to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that assists in identifying areas of your home that require attention and creates a cleaning path to get around them. This technology is very efficient at navigating around toys that are left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out under things. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts drifting away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers underneath the Roomba's bottom, which don't have bristles and therefore tend to resist tangles more than previous models. They are also taller and can be tucked under beds or couches that are low. They're designed to make this model more movable on various kinds of floors.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other models with a high-end price tag due to its latest dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a great improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored very well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it struggled with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.
Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's even far from being as costly as some of the other top models on this list. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a top model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps and smart home integration that you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will return to its dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of sand. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know when the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
